In 40 seconds
A marathon causes measurable muscle damage, micro-tears, immune dysregulation, and inflammation that takes weeks to fully resolve. PEMF therapy accelerates each phase of recovery — reducing inflammation, supporting muscle repair, improving sleep quality (critical for recovery). Used by elite marathoners and increasingly mainstream in club-level distance running.
Quick facts
- Marathon damage: Muscle micro-tears, immune dysregulation, inflammation
- Full recovery: 2–4 weeks typically
- PEMF role: Accelerates each phase of recovery
- Best stack: PEMF + sleep + nutrition + gentle movement
- Sessions: Daily 2–3 days post, then 3× per week × 2 weeks
Why this injury happens in this sport
Creatine kinase peaks 24–48 hours post-marathon. Soreness peaks day 2–3. Sleep is poor for the first week. The body is in inflammatory repair mode for ~2 weeks.
Recovery and return to sport
Day 0–2: gentle movement only, daily PEMF (40 min full-body mat). Week 1: easy movement returns, PEMF 3× per week. Week 2: easy running returns, PEMF reduces to maintenance.
Contraindications
Hard exclusions — do not have PEMF if any apply:
- Pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), or any cardiac electronic device
- Cochlear implant or other implanted electronic hearing device
- Spinal cord stimulator, deep-brain stimulator, vagus nerve stimulator
- Intrathecal pump or implanted drug pump
- Insulin pump (continuous glucose monitors are usually fine — confirm with the clinic)
- Active infection at the treatment site
- Pregnancy — when treatment would be over the abdomen, lumbar spine, or pelvis
Discuss with your GP or specialist before booking if any apply:
- Active malignancy or recent cancer history (oncologist clearance required)
- History of seizures or epilepsy
- Multiple sclerosis or other neurological condition under specialist care
- Anticoagulant therapy (PEMF itself does not thin blood, but bruising risk if local circulation is already compromised)
- Children under 14 (most UK clinics will not treat under-18s without paediatric specialist input)
- Recent surgery within the last 14 days at the treatment site (confirm with surgeon)
NOT contraindications — these are commonly misunderstood:
- Plates, rods, screws and other passive metal orthopaedic hardware
- Dental implants and dental crowns
- Joint replacements (hip, knee, shoulder)
- IUDs (copper or hormonal)
- Tattoos and piercings (jewellery should be removed for the session)
Specific to this condition: pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, insulin pumps, electronic implants; active malignancy without specialist clearance; pregnancy (over the abdomen); active infection; epilepsy without GP clearance.
Frequently asked questions
When can I run again after a marathon?
Most runners return to gentle running at day 7–10. PEMF supports faster, cleaner recovery.
What about ice baths?
Useful in the first 24 hours but blunt training adaptation if overused. PEMF doesn't have this trade-off.
